The cheerful group of 16 from the “London European Club” hiked the Mediterranean area of Montenegro in April 2016. This is the song about it, written by Rees Watson:
A week in Montenegro
What a country! What a find!
Spectacular mountain scenery
Enough to blow the mind!So many different opinions
Of which view meant the most
A spectacular mountain panorama
Or vista of the coast? The view from Peter II mausoleum
Was my jewel in that feast
I won’t ever forget it
Until my heart has ceasedA motley band of travelers
British in the main
But also folk from Poland
Italia, France & SpainAn action patched itinerary
From the moment we arrived
I am not quite sure exatly
Just how my legs survivedUpward, ever upward
Exploring mountain peaks
Then dawn an unmade footpaths
The aches to last for weeks! What else will I remember
As the sands of time will pass?
Floating down a lake
With the water still as glassTaking in the culture
Informed by local guides
And the expertise of Vlatko
Relayed with passion and prideGood food and plenty of it
Inexpensive beer and wine
Ruzica’s knowing look
I’ll remember for all timeThere would be a few minuses
To set against the pluses
Barking dogs at 05.00 am
Unreliable busesDilapidated buildings
Not a healthy cat insight
Bugs lurking in one hotel’s rooms
To attack you in the nightBut hey! It’s a hiking holliday
And we ride the smooth and rough
The people and the scenery
More than compensate enoughWhatever came up, our noble guides
Fielded without fuss
Listened, planned and organized
And did their level best for us.It’s been a real privilege
To get to know this place
I just need to think of it
For a smile to cross my face
