Surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania, with area on 13 812 km² only, Montenegro has an amazing geographic diversity!
From the coast up to the northern mountains, so many places are worth to be seen: Boka Kotorska bay (which is the only Mediterranean fiord, also the UNESCO world heritage site), sandy Long Beach (12 km long), Skadar Lake (the largest lake in Balkans&National park), Biogradska Gora (National park), Durmitor massif (UNESCO world heritage site&National park), Tara River Canyon (the deepest canyon in Europe&UNESCO world heritage site ), breathtaking massif of Prokletije and coastal mountains (Orjen , Lovćen and Rumija) with excellent sea views and remarkable history... as many other sites.
Almost all these locations are still not much visited by hikers, so visitors can really feel the peace of the untouched wilderness!
Through its turbulent history, Montenegro has become a special multi-cultural entity! First known inhabitants in this area were Illyrian tribes, which were conquered by Romans in 168 BC. The Slavs started settling in about 6-7th century and today the Slavs are majority in Montenegrin population.
Montenegro is an area with tree main religions: Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim as consequences of long standing influences of Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman rules. During different periods through history, this territory was known as Doclea, Zeta and in Middle Ages as Crna Gora (Montenegro).
It is magical to meet excellent samples of the baroque architecture in the north-west part of the country while less than hundred kilometres southeast it is possible to enjoy the typically oriental ambience. Also, the mystic of many magnificent Orthodox monasteries is unforgettable.
Local people are open, friendly and hospitable. It is not unusual if they offer some fantastic homemade cheese or rakija as a welcoming gesture to chance guests in the countryside!
Montenegro is the country with 650 000 inhabitants only.
Even it is not an EU member, Montenegro's official currency is Euro. |
